FAQs

How do I book online tuition?

To book online tuition, parents/carers should contact Bek via email.

Bek will discuss your child’s individual learning requirements with you. This will include the following, in addition to other information:

  • Your child’s age and year group (if they attend school)
  • Which subject(s) your child would like help with
  • Which days and times would be suitable for weekly online sessions

What happens after I have booked online lessons?

After we have decided on days and times that the tuition will take place online, Bek will send you her policies, including terms and conditions, a safeguarding policy, and others.

You are required to return the ‘Statement of Work’ with the blue part completed and signed, to show you agree to the terms.

Once Bek receives the completed ‘Statement of Work’, she will send a Zoom link and an invoice for the first session. The invoice should be paid at least 24 hours before the session.

Can you guarantee that my child will pass the eleven plus entrance examinations and get into the secondary school of their choice?

No. Online tuition is only a part of the preparation needed to take the eleven plus entrance tests.

There are many variables that mean that a child might not pass their eleven plus tests. If they do pass, there is also a possibility that they won’t get into the school of their choice, due to admission criteria from the secondary school or if the school is oversubscribed, for example.

Online eleven plus preparation supports students to improve their skills in the eleven plus topics and to become more familiar with the question types that may come up in the exams.

Can you support my child with more than one subject?

Yes, it is possible to support children in more than one subject. It is generally best to have lessons that are focussed on one subject but, depending on the child, it may possible to split the sessions.

Here are some of the different ways Bek has worked with students previously:

  • Some students have half and hour of maths and half and hour of English per session.
  • Others may need to have a full hour of English one week and a full hour of maths the next week.
  • It is also possible to start with weekly maths sessions, for example, then change to weekly English sessions.

This is something that we would discuss and adapt as the tuition sessions progressed. Sessions can be quite flexible, as long as enough notice is given for a change.

What are your qualifications and experience?

Bek has a BA(Hons) in English and Education Studies with a PGCE (Key Stage One and Key Two specialist).

She has worked in schools from 2004 until 2021 as a class teacher, a supply teacher and more recently as a one-to-one and small group intervention teacher.

Since 2021, Bek has worked solely as an online tutor for students aged five to sixteen years old in English, maths and 11+ subjects.

What happens during an online tuition session?

All lessons are tailored to the individual needs of each student. Interactive documents and games are shared via Zoom and other online applications. Each student is expected to bring a notepad and a pen or pencil, so that they can write their ideas on paper in addition to the work done online. This can be easily shared by holding their writing up to the camera on Zoom.

What does my child need to access online tuition sessions?

Students should access online tuition sessions using a laptop, desktop computer or tablet. Lessons are delivered via Zoom .

All children should bring a notepad and pen or pencil to every lesson. It is also useful to bring coloured pencils and a ruler.

Depending on the subjects being studied, students may need to bring various items to support the more practical tasks. Parents and carers will be notified of any resources needed.

For exam preparation, parents and carers will be expected to purchase the relevant exam preparation packs. Parents and carers will be notified of any resources needed.

Are online lessons like lockdown learning?

Since the lockdowns, our understanding of the technology used to deliver online lessons has come a long way. Online lessons are structured in a different way to the majority of online lessons that took place during the pandemic. All students that have worked with Bek, so far, have reported that online tuition is nothing like the learning they experienced during the lockdowns.
